PUNJABI SHAHI PANEER

What is Shahi Paneer?

Shahi Paneer is a popular and delectable North Indian delicacy that originated in Mughlai cuisine.

Shahi = Royal, and Paneer = Indian cheese, often known as cottage cheese. Put together, it makes a Royal Paneer dish suitable for Kings. This meal will, as its name suggests, leave diners wanting more.

Shahi Paneer is a creamy textured gravy dish that pairs well with Chapati, Parantha, butter naan, or rice. Cubes of Paneer are simmered in a shahi sauce that is rich, silky smooth, and somewhat sweet in flavor. A bite leaves your tongue with a modest sweetness and a delicate taste of whole spices. Royal Paneer tastes lovely, which is why it is the most popular dish at the vegetarian buffet.

A Brief History

Mughals ruled India from the 1400s to the 1800s. The food made during their reign was vibrant, often including nuts, dried fruits, and warming spices. Other dishes associated with the Mughlai rule include biryani, paratha, tandoor, and pulao, as well as a well-known dish called Shahi Paneer. It comes with a white gravy consisting of onion and Yogurt. There are no tomatoes included. Full of nuts, saffron, and aromatic spices. Because the gravy contains minimal spice powders, it has moderate but pleasant flavors.

It is the Punjabi variant of Royal paneer. Of course, it is influenced by the Mughlai form but with a very different flavor profile. Tomatoes, and spices (along with saffron and aromatics) are used here, so the gravy is orangey-red, just like traditional Punjabi gravies.

You'll love this recipe because giving the white gravy of Shahi Paneer Masala a Punjabi touch to bring a unique flavor and creamy texture makes it 100 times better than any restaurant-style Shahi Paneer.

Shahi means 'Royal.' Yes, it makes a rich and satisfying main course—ideal for a special occasion, a family dinner, or a dinner for guests. When you have company, Shahi Paneer is a must-have item on the menu.

Make and reheat just before serving, so there is no hassle at dinnertime. This dish can be refrigerated and reheated to retain its delicacy and flavor.

It has a mild spicy flavor with a slight sweetness, making it a favored dish among children—cottage cheese's creamy taste and smooth texture melt in the mouth with every bite.
