This Thanksgiving dressing recipe is nothing frilly or trendy. Just a classic, easy, and amazing homemade stuffing recipe that everyone loves. This bread stuffing consists of simple ingredients with stellar results!

To Stuff or Not Stuff Turkey?

Many people cook the turkey with sage and onion stuffing inside. (Obviously, that's why it's called "stuffing," isn’t it?!) But then there are others who cook the stuffing separately from the turkey.
Why? There are two reasons –
  • It is much easier to get the turkey evenly cooked (and safer, too) if you do not stuff it.
  • You can make as much turkey dressing as you want, as you are not limited to the quantity the body cavity of the turkey can hold.
But again, you’re completely free to stuff your turkey with this stuffing, please go ahead! This recipe makes more stuffing than usual, so you can cook some of the stuffing inside the turkey and cook the rest of it on a stovetop.

Tips for Making the best turkey stuffing

  • To save time on the day of serving, bake and dry the bread the night before and leave it uncovered on the kitchen counter till the morning when you’re ready to make the stuffing.
  • The saltiness of low-sodium chicken broth varies, and so do personal preferences, so salt the dish adequately as per preferences, to make the best stuffing recipe.
  • If you need to keep the homemade stuffing warm before serving, cover it loosely with foil and place it in an oven at 200˚F.

How to make delicious turkey stuffing

Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Butter
  • 1 pound day-old white French bread, diced into ½-inch cubes and dried
  • 1 extra-large (about 2-½ cups) sweet Vidalia or yellow onion, diced small
  • 1-½ cups - Celery, diced small
  • ⅔ cup - Italian flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely minced
  • ¼ cup - Fresh sage leaves (finely minced)
  • 3 tablespoons - Fresh rosemary (finely minced)
  • 2 tablespoons - Fresh thyme (finely minced)
  • 1 teaspoon - Salt, or as per taste
  • 1 teaspoon - Pepper, or as per taste
  • 2-½ cups - Low-sodium chicken broth, divided
  • 2 - Large eggs

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 250˚F. Place the bread cubes on a baking sheet and bake them, stirring occasionally, until dried out, or around 45 minutes. Ensure to begin with very dry bread or it’ll turn mushy very quickly.
  • When you’re ready to make the stuffing, transfer the bread to a large bowl. Set it aside.
  • Preheat the oven to 350˚F and spray the pan/baking dish with cooking spray. Set it aside.
  • Add ¾ cup (or 1-½ sticks) of butter to a large skillet, and heat on medium-high heat to melt.
  • Add the celery and onions and cook until the vegetables have softened and are just turning lightly brown, or around 10 minutes. Keep stirring regularly. Transfer the vegetables to a bowl with the bread.
  • Add the sage, rosemary, parsley, thyme, pepper, salt, and 1-¼ cups chicken broth, and toss well to combine. Set it aside.
  • Now, add the remaining 1-¼ cups chicken broth and 2 eggs into a small bowl, and whisk well to mix. Pour this mixture over the bread and toss well to combine. Pour it out into the already-prepared baking dish.
  • Chop the remaining ¼ cup (or ½ of a stick) of butter into 8-10 pieces and evenly dot the butter over the top of the stuffing.
  • Cover the stuffing with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  •  Uncover and bake for an additional 40-45 minutes, or until the top of the stuffing is lightly golden brown, or as per your preferences.
  • Serve immediately.
