Who invented Biryani?

The true origin of Biryani is yet to be cleared. It is believed by many historians that Biryani originated in Persia, after that it was brought to India by Mughals. The Biryani further evolved in the royal Mughal kitchen. 

Another theory says that Biryani was brought by the Arab merchants to Malabar in Southern India. The versions of Biryani differs from region to region. 

How to make Chicken Biryani?

For Chicken Marination:

  • Half kg Chicken
  • 3 Tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1 ½ Tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 Tbsp Biryani powder
  • ½ Tbsp turmeric powder
  • ½ Tbsp grounded pepper
  • 1 Tbsp grounded coriander
  • 1 Tbsp red chili powder
  • Salt as per taste 

For cooking Biryani:

  • Basmati rice
  • Cooking oil
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • Cumin seeds
  • 3 Cloves
  • 2 cardamoms 
  • Onions


  • Cut chicken into small pieces and add them to a large bowl. 
  • Add all the mentioned ingredients to the bowl and give it a nice mix.
  • Marinate the chicken well and set aside for at least 1 hour.
  • Drain and soak 2 cups of rice in water for about 30 mins, you can take basmati rice for preparing Biryani. 
  • Heat oil well in a pressure cooker and add bay leaf, cumin seeds, cloves and cardamom. After few seconds, when whole spices turn aromatic, add sliced onions and fry on a medium flame till they are translucent or golden brown. 
  • Now add the marinated chicken and saute for about 5 mins. Cook the chicken completely till it turns soft.
  • Add spices and salt. You also have to add yogurt. Mix everything well.
  • Add the drained rice all over the chicken along with water. Cover the cooker and let it whistle once. After the pressure of the cooker is released naturally, open the lid of the cooker and serve Biryani in layers.

Garnish your hot Biryani with cilantro, you can also garnish it with mint leaves and lemon juice is optional. The Biryani can be best served with raita. Raita is made with yogurt and chopped cucumber along with spices. Also, you can serve Biryani with a condiment.
